Mercedes Schlapp, the White House strategist for communications, has a challenging job. She must contend with the president, who acts as his own communication director, multiple legal battles which can disrupt the administration's messaging strategy as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries ensnared in their own controversies. Schlapp is, however, maintained her focus on her job. She works closely with White House political affairs and committees on legislation as well as policy shops and the wider communications operation in order to oversee the rollout of policies. To date, her focus is on issues like security in schools as well as the opioid epidemic infrastructure, trade and other related topics. At the moment she isn't in contact with many reporters. Her attention in March came when she was named one of the potential candidates for the job of replacing Hope Hicks. Her main area of focus has included issues like the safety of schools, trade and the opioid epidemic. In her current position, Schlapp does not deal too much with journalists. The issue came up in March when she was the subject of a sudden surge in media attention when it became known that Schlapp would be an option to replace Hope Hicks's post as the director of communications. The fight has been ugly. Schlapp's allies and Tony Sayegh started arguing with the media. Following the Washington Examiner published a negative story about Sayegh, Schlapp stated that she called Sayegh to show a open heart.
